The Hermitage Academy has a dedicated support team who assist pupils with academic, behavioural, social and emotional needs that could be potential barriers to learning.  SEND needs are split into four key areas which are explained below along with the support or provision may be allocated.

Communication and Interaction difficulties such as speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and students with ASD, including Aspergers Syndrome and Autism.

Support may include:

  • Access to small group and/or individualised interventions to develop skills in communication, interaction, emotional awareness and self-care.
  • Visual timetables.
  • Access to low stimulus area or safe area.
  • Flexible approaches to timetable.
  • Modifications to lunch and/or break times.
  • Access to technology where appropriate.
  • Explicit teaching of transferring skills from one context to another
  • Careful planning of transitions.

Cognition and Learning where students may need to learn at a slower pace to their peers, ranging from moderate learning difficulties (MLD) to profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). Including specialist support for specific learning difficulties (SpLD) such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.

Support may include:

  • Targeted QFT.
  • Focused spelling/reading intervention
  • Practical aids for learning
  • Reading material suited to age
  • Access to technical aids e.g. spell checker, ICT software and/or hardware
  • Exam access arrangements.
  • Opportunities for overlearning through repetition and reinforcement.

Social, emotional and mental health difficulties where students may have a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) or attainment disorder.

Support may include:

  • Access to counselling services.
  • Supported transition programmes.
  • Small group work targeting social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
  • Resilience intervention.
  • 1:1 mentoring.
  • Timetable modifications.
  • Behaviour/Anger support.

Sensory and/or physical needs including students who may have Physical disabilities (PD), a visual impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI) or a multi-sensory impairment (MSI).

Support may include:

  • Additional in class support as appropriate.
  • Resource adaptions.
  • Access to ICT.
  • Concrete apparatus available to support learning
  • Adapted curriculum to enable full access.
